Name & Description of Peer Support Services Offered:
Community Network is a service offered by DA-Vic to resource and assist members of diabetes support groups. Community Network:
- Provides information to members and to the general public about diabetes
- Facilitates and coordinates community education forums in metropolitan Melbourne, regional and rural areas
- Works with health care professionals including dietitians, podiatrists and diabetes educators to raise the awareness of diabetes complications
- Advocates for change and better lifestyle options through community support and education.
Currently there are over 60 diabetes support groups across the state of Victoria. Diabetes Support Groups are an opportunity to share information and hear about other people's experiences of living with diabetes. They can provide support, education and information in an inclusive environment amongst peers, family and friends.
Community Network (ComNet) can help people to:
- better understand how to manage their type 1 or type 2 diabetes and any associated complications
- understand how to live with a chronic illness in a positive and empowering environment
- make new friends, learn from others and share experiences and information
- build skills and knowledge to help people advocate for the rights of those living with diabetes.
- Type 1 Diabetes Support Groups aim to improve the knowledge and skill levels of people with type 1 diabetes, to help them manage their condition and to support them with appropriate resources and information.
- Type 2 Diabetes Support Groups are located across the state and provide an opportunity to build friendships and gain access to professional health and wellbeing information.
